City to enforce open burn ordinance immediately

October 17, 2024

Waynesboro Fire Chief Willard “Buster” Crocker announced Thursday that officials will immediately begin heavy enforcement of the city’s open burn ordinance.

Crocker informed the Board of Supervisors of the move Thursday after the county enacted a burn ban that is still needing state approval.

Residents within the city limits are reminded that this ordinance has been in effect for years. With the dry conditions, the WFD and police will be enforcing it more diligently until conditions improve.

While the ordinance bans outdoor burning and open flames, Crocker said people can still grill and have outdoor barbecues but must make sure that hot coals are disposed of properly so as not to present a fire hazard.
