A fugitive from justice in Missouri was apprehended on Monday morning in
Waynesboro.
Jeffrey Allen Garrett, 40, was apprehended at the Budget Inn in
Waynesboro. He was wanted on warrants involving a double homicide and
two counts of criminal activity. When officers and deputies arrived at
the scene, he refused to come out of his motel room but eventually
surrendered to officials without incident.
According to Waynesboro Police Department Investigations Commander Don
Hopkins, Garrett fled from Greene County, Mo. in the Springfield area
after he fled that area.
"The Springfield Police Department learned that he was in the area and
sent us copies of the arrest warrants," Hopkins said. "The U.S.
Marshal's Department was also looking for him and told our department to
go ahead and apprehend him.
"We located him and he wouldn't come out at first. He was finally taken
into custody with no forceful action needed to be taken."
Hopkins said he Garrett is also facing fugitive from justice charges in
Missouri and is expected to be extradited to that state as soon as
possible.
The investigator said Garrett and a female identified as his girlfriend
had arrived in the area last week.
"They had been here at the Budget Inn for about a week," Hopkins said.
"He had his girlfriend with him and she said they drove down here to
visit some relatives of his.
"Those relatives apparently took the vehicle --- and anything inside the
vehicle --- and it has not been located yet."
Both the WPD and Wayne County Sheriff's Office worked the case together,
Hopkins said.
