County enacts burn ban effective immediately

October 17, 2024

Tuesday morning, Wayne County’s Board of Supervisors voted to enact a countywide burn ban for at least the next 30 days.

The decision was prompted after a Wednesday grass fire (pictured on this page) consumed roughly 120 acres of land in the southern portion of the county. Fire officials said multiple fires have tied of VFD personnel greatly.

With the ban, no outdoor burning will be allowed. That means brush burning or burning of debris will be prohibited. Any one caught violating the ban can be fined.

County and city officials, along with the Mississippi Forestry Commission are not affected by the ban. In addition, individuals and companies certified properly by MFC are not banned.

Residents are urged not to burn vegetation or debris and to not dispose of any charcoal or ashes from grills onto the ground. Fire pits should also not be used while the ban is in place.
