Wednesday afternoon’s storm and strong winds ripped the roof off a local business and deposited it on at least one home in the Waynesboro Housing Authority.
Around 3 p.m., a strong storm rolled through Waynesboro and pulled the roof off Alexander’s Discount Liquor. The roof then landed on at least one home in the Housing Authority located on the west side of the city near Azalea Mart.
Emergency and police personnel secured the scene and were expected to be on hand until the building could be fully secured in order to protect inventory.
The storm also knocked out power through many parts of the city.
There was a report of a tree down on Turner Street, along with weather-related incidents reported on Mississippi Drive, Turner Street, River Drive, First Methodist Church of Waynesboro, Winter Street and Pine Street, Pinkerton Road, the intersection of Waynesboro Shubuta and Old Highway 84 and the intersection of Latham Street and Turner Street, among other reports.
There was also a report of an electrical fire at the intersection of Hudson Lane and Spring Street. It was not known if that was related to the storm.
Everyone is asked to not go sightseeing as this will hamper emergency personnel.
Drivers are also urged to avoid areas where there is standing water. Remember to Turn Around — Don’t Drown.
