A 3-year-old child was struck by a bullet early Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly after 12 noon Tuesday on Spring Street 
near the intersection with Winter Street. The Waynesboro Police 
Department, Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Wayne General Hospital all 
responded to the scene.
The incident is being investigated, and WPD Chief Brian Everett and 
other officers on the scene indicated the preliminary investigation 
indicates the shooting may have been accidental.
Officers were gathering evidence at the scene, and retrieved a handgun 
from the backseat of the vehicle. Medical personnel treated the child on 
the scene and then transported the child to Wayne General Hospital.
The name and gender of the child were not being released.
