Officials from around the state came to Wayne County Tuesday morning to
try and solve the case of remains discovered in a wooded area early
Monday night.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Department was alerted to the discovery of
remains in a wooded area just past the Shubuta exit on Highway 45. The
remains were found by workers cruising timber in the area, with the
remains found roughly a quarter mile into the woods.
According to WCSO Chief Deputy Geoffery Clark, the call was received
right before dark on Monday night. In addition to bones and remains that
were scattered around the area, some clothing and a suitcase were found.
Clark said the suitcase appeared to be "several years old" and it was
not known if the items were connected to the remains.
Since it was becoming dark, deputies sealed off the area Monday night
and secured the scene.
Tuesday morning, members of the Mississippi Crime Lab, Mississippi
Bureau of Investigation and anthropologists from Mississippi State
University arrived to assist with the investigation.
It was not known if the remains were human or not, which is why MSU
officials were called in to assist.
If it is determined the remains are human, they would be sent to the
State Crime Lab to try and determine the identification of the person.
