UPDATE — Clarifying unknown Veteran information; help still needed

June 17, 2026

An update on the unknown Veteran:
"After hearing from some readers and getting other people to decipher
the handwriting, we wanted to update the public on the unknown Veteran
that we are seeking the name of," said Publisher Paul Keane. "We are
hoping that the family of the Veteran will contact us with the name so
that we make sure we get it correct in our July 2 America 250 edition.
"In the flurry of having so many things submitted, dropped off and
emailed, we failed to get the name of this particular Veteran. We have
the information on the person's service, but no name. In addition, there
is a copy of the Honorable Discharge papers, but it is nothing but a
blank form."
The handwritten information on the paper that was submitted stated the
following:
"Dates 10/43-02/46. Rank-Corporal. Military Speciality Truck Driver.
Offenses: Okinawa, Ryuku Islands,, Occupation of China. Medals Good
Conduct, Honorable Service Lapel Pin."
Keane said he hopes that someone will come forward and provide the name
of the Veteran.
"We don't want to miss the chance to recognize this Veteran," he said.
"Unfortunately, if we can't get the name, the photo will run without the
name and information."
Anyone who can provide the Veteran's name is asked to call the office at
601-735-4341 or email Keane at news@thewaynecountynews.com.
