1SGT KEVIN RUFUS HENDRY
Jan. 19, 1955-Feb. 21, 2025
1SGT Kevin Rufus Hendry, 70, of Waynesboro, died on Friday, Feb. 21,
2025 at his residence.
Born in Gulfport on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 1955 to the late Hazel Mae and
Rufus Wilson Hendry, his unwavering faith and mission to bring as many
to Jesus was remarkable. He was a good man who would do for others in
need.
His skills as a "shade tree mechanic," whether it was a diesel turbo
or a 2-cylinder engine, were amazing. There wasn't anything he
couldn't repair. Even it it was yard equipment, chain saws and bush
hedgers, he could do it all. He could repair household appliances,
toilets, plumbing fixtures — you name it, he could do it. If it was
broken, he could fix it!
When not working on something broken, he enjoyed the outdoors by
spending time hunting and fishing.
In his younger days, he enlisted and joined the 82nd Airborne, and he
was an Infantry Soldier through and through. He retired from the United
States Army as a 1st Sgt., HHC, III Corp., Fort Hood, Texas after
serving for 22 years. He was on the SGM Selection List upon retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Karen Cecilia Hendry of
Waynesboro; his daughter, Melissa Hendry Kerns of Parkersburg, W.V.; his
stepson and his spouse, Dustin Eugene and Sara Rider of Belleville,
Ill.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David Wilson and Cynthia
Hendry of Jasper, Ga., Michael Myles Hendry of Wiggins and Ronald Lance
and Genie Hendry of Biloxi; his sister and brother-in-law, Cathy Jo
Hendry and Michael Aust of Blackburg, Va.; a host of grandchildren; his
nephew and his spouse, Brandon and McKinsey Hendry of Saucier; his niece
and her spouse, Amanda and Matthew D'Angelo of Biloxi; and a host of
great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Mae and Gunnery Sgt.
Rufus Wilson Hendry.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in his
name.
He will also remain the hearts of his loved ones and will be deeply
missed. The family asks that those who loved him to continue to spread
the word of his Lord Jesus.
