Lady War Eagles rally only to suffer heartbreaker in Game 3
SUMMITT --- The Lady War Eagles of WCHS overcame a 4-0 deficit with nine
runs in the top of the seventh, only to see North Pike rally with six
runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-9 win in Game 3 of a
first-round softball playoff series Tuesday night.
The loss ended the season for WCHS with a 15-14 record.
The Lady Jaguars scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and
appeared to be making it stand. With one out in the top of the seventh,
though, WCHS rallied with a vengeance.
That's when Calia Powe scored twice and single runs came from Karson
Tate, Olivia Sims, Annaston Tate, Jaycee Ford and Gracie Swindle to take
a 9-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, North Pike answered with six runs to
advance to the second round against East Central.
For the night, the Lady Jags collected 10 hits and took advantage of
five WCHS errors. The Lady War Eagles collected 11 hits.
Karson Tate went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Sims was
1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Newburn went 1-for-4 with three RBI
and a double while Brianna Hudson was 1-for-4 with a double, Powe went
1-for-3, Carrie Ann Beasley went 1-for-4 , Ford was 1-for-4 and Swindle
went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The game winning run was scored with two outs in the bottom of the
seventh.
In the pitching circle, Newburn turned in a yeoman's performance. The
senior worked 6-2/3 innings and threw 126 pitches, with 88 of those
going for strikes against the 38 batters she faced.
She gave up 10 runs (six earned) off 10 hits and four walks while
striking out five.
The Lady War Eagles finished third in District 4-5A, dropping a crucial
one-run game to Vancleave late in the season to decide the No. 2 seed
in the playoffs.
