Jaguars use defense to secure 27-8 win
By Paul Keane
The Wayne County News
The Jaguars of Wayne Academy overcame a slow start --- spotting Amite
School eight early points --- before taking a 27-8 win over the Rebels
Friday night.
The win improved W.A. to 2-1 overall but, more importantly, 1-0 in
district action. The Jaguars travel southeast next week to face Columbia
Academy in a district outing.
The visiting Rebels got on the board first with a 30-yard pass to make
it 8-0 with 4:31 left in the opening quarter of play. From there, the
W.A. defense stiffened, though, picking off two passes and recovering a
fumble while stopping the Rebels on fourth down four times.
Wayne Academy answered that scored with a 42-yard touchdown run by
Ja'Marquese Ray. The Colton Stringer extra point made it 8-7 Rebels
with 9:56 left.
On the ensuing series, Caden Lowery picked off a pass and returned it
more than 40 yards down to the Amite 4-yard line. McRee then hit Cade
McCaa with a short flare pass that McCaa turned into a touchdown.
Stringer's extra point set the margin at 14-8 Jaguars at the half.
Lowery caught a 22-yard pass from McRee with 8:48 left in the third
quarter to make it 20-8.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, McRee hit McCaa in stride for a
39-yard touchdown pass. The Stringer kick set the final margin at 27-8.
