Jags top Rebels in season opener
By Paul Keane
The Wayne County News
TOXEY, Ala. --- The Jaguars of Wayne Academy slogged their way through a
humid season opener Friday night, downing the Rebels of South Choctaw
(Ala.) Academy, 32-8.
The win moved W.A. to 1-0 on the year heading into a home opener Friday
night against Richton.
As is typical with first games, there were plenty of miscues and
turnovers on both sides. W.A. suffered four lost fumbles and an
interception while the Rebels had four lost fumbles and two
interceptions.
The Jaguars drew first blood when Davin Lowery hauled in a 19-yard pass
from Will McRee. The Colton Stringer extra point made it 7-0 with 10:50
left in the first quarter.
With 2:28 remaining in the period, Stringer scored on a 10-yard run to
make it 13-0.
In the second quarter, Justice Beard scored on a 1-yard run at the 9:35
mark to make it 19-0, but the Rebels answered with a 15-yard scoring
jaunt with 1:34 left in the half to trim the deficit down to 19-8 at the
intermission.
In the third quarter, Davin Lowery hauled in a 14-yard pass form McRee,
and the Stringer extra point made it 26-8.
Finally, with 7:46 left in the third, Ja'Marquis Ray raced 50 yards for
a score to set the final margin.

War Eagles fall in close scrimmage game
By Doris Keane
The Wayne County News
A penalty on a two-point conversion proved to the difference Friday
night as the War Eagles of WCHS fell, 14-13, in a scrimmage against
Harrison Central at home.
The War Eagles now prepare for a Thursday night season opener on the
road against Oak Grove.
The varsity played only two quarters of action as Mississippi High
School Activities regulations limit action in preseason contests.
Harrison Central scored first on a 21-yard pass play to open up a 7-0
lead.
In the second quarter, with 8:58 remaining, Marquise Leverette hauled in
a 12-yard pass form Jacob Bowles, and the Kyle Clark kick knotted things
at 7-all.
With 3:54 remaining in the game, Harrison Central scored on an 11-yard
pass to move out to a 14-7 advantage.
The War Eagles quickly drove downfield, scoring on a 1-yard run from
Bowles with two seconds left. An illegal procedure penalty on the
two-point conversion attempt thwarted the rally, though, and allowed
Harrison Central to escape with the win.
