War Eagles tune up with scrimmage against Jackson

By Paul Keane

The Wayne County News

Wayne County High School's football program tuned up for the 2022 season with a jamboree at home Friday night, winning the varsity outing and falling in the junior varsity contest.

Both the JV and varsity squads played two, 12-minute quarters each. WCHS now prepares for Thursday's season opener at home against Quitman.

In the varsity contest, the War Eagles controlled most things, allowing the Aggies short gains through the air while stuffing the run. The defense also forced turnovers that allowed the offense to set up shop with a short field.

With 3:10 left in the first quarter, Aikerion Hopkins scored on a 2-yard run to make it 6-0. Just under two minutes later, Hezekiah West scored on a 29-yard run to make it 12-0 with 1:11.

The Aggies answered in the second quarter, using an 11-yard pass to hit pay dirt and cut the deficit down to 12-6 with 5:21 left in the contest. Fifteen seconds later, Jalon Jones hauled in a pass from Carter Hankins and turned it into a 70-yard scoring strike. That set the final margin at 18-6.

WCHS rushed for 75 yards and passed for another 112 while holding Jackson to 18 yards on the ground and 107 through the airways.

In the junior varsity contest, the War Eagles drew first blood when Sandricko Mayfield scored on a 1-yard run with 5:54 left in the first quarter. Jackson answered with a 23-yard touchdown pass to knot things up at 6-all with 3:39 remaining in the period.

Jackson added another score with 5:!3 left in the contest, this time off a 12-yard run.

The War Eagles rushed for 34 yards and passed for another 17. The Aggies gained 101 on the ground and 77 through the airways.
