Residents warned of telephone scam working through area

Officials with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department want to alert the

community to a scam making its way through the area.

According to Chief Deputy Geoffery Clark, someone is call people in the

area and representing themselves as a member of the Sheriff's

Department. The caller is asking for money and threatening people with

incarceration if they do not make the payment.

Clark said the number is 601 number from Brandon.

"We do not collect money for fines and other offenses," Clark said. "The

courts do that and our department would never call in an attempt to

collect money from an individual."

Residents reminded to not give out personal information, especially any

financial information, to anyone unless they are 100 percent sure the

person trying to collect the information can be trusted.
